Authorities are currently investigating an inmate escape at the Orleans Parish Jail, which took place on Friday. The jail is on lockdown as law enforcement pursues the remaining fugitives.

Of the 11 inmates who escaped, two have been recaptured: one by Louisiana State Police and another by the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) during an active search. The nine inmates still at large are all described as violent offenders awaiting trial.

The escape was discovered during a routine headcount around 8:30 a.m., several hours after the inmates broke free sometime past midnight. NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick noted a “concerning” delay in notifying the public, which occurred after 10 a.m.

A citywide manhunt is in effect, involving various local, state, and federal agencies, including the FBI and the U.S. Marshals. Kirkpatrick mentioned that facial recognition technology may have aided in identifying one of the escapees, who was located in the downtown area.

Governor Jeff Landry issued a stern warning via social media, emphasizing that those responsible for the escape will be apprehended. He stated, “If you think this will fly in Louisiana you are DEAD WRONG. Every single one of you will be caught!”

Kirkpatrick confirmed that the police department is reaching out to victims and witnesses linked to the inmates’ cases to ensure their safety, encouraging any concerned individuals to seek assistance. She also warned that anyone found assisting the escapees would face charges as accomplices.

While the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office has yet to release images of the escapees, further identifying details will be shared with the public as they become available.

This is an evolving situation, and updates will continue to be provided by local news outlets. As this investigation unfolds, cooperation from the community will be essential in ensuring the swift capture of the remaining escapees, highlighting the continued commitment of law enforcement to public safety.
