The much-anticipated solar event known as Manhattanhenge is set to grace the skies of New York City on May 28 and May 29, offering a stunning visual display as the setting sun aligns perfectly with the Manhattan street grid. On the first night, viewers can witness a “half sun” at 8:13 pm, while the following evening will present the full spectacle at 8:12 pm.
For residents of Queens, Brooklyn, and other outer boroughs, there is no need to navigate through the crowds of Midtown to enjoy this breathtaking phenomenon. Dr. Jackie Faherty, an astronomer at the American Museum of Natural History, suggests heading to locations with expansive eastern views for the best experience. Notably, Hunter’s Point South Park in Long Island City is the only site officially recommended by NYC Parks for Manhattanhenge, offering clear waterfront views and the added charm of East River reflections.
Another favored location among viewers is Gantry Plaza State Park, praised by Dr. Faherty for its long vantage point. For those seeking a dramatic perspective, the pedestrian path on the Queensboro Bridge provides panoramic views of both the river and the iconic Manhattan skyline.
While Brooklyn doesn’t have many prime viewing spots, residents can seek out west-facing streets or rooftops in Greenpoint, especially between 59th and 110th Streets. Roosevelt Island’s southern tip at Four Freedoms Park also offers an impressive vantage point with a centered view of the phenomenon, and adventurous viewers can catch the spectacle from the iconic tram.
Even in Manhattan, there are over 150 crosstown streets where locals can find their own unique spot to capture the sunset without enduring overwhelming crowds. So whether you find yourself in the outer boroughs or in the heart of the city, prepare your favorite sunset playlist and your camera—this solar celebration is a must-see, and everyone is welcome to join in!
This event not only showcases the beauty of our natural world but also invites communities to come together and appreciate the awe of nature’s artistry in a bustling urban landscape.
