Shaka Hislop has spoken out about Manchester United’s poor performance in their crushing 3-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
The match on Sunday saw Tottenham’s Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke all scoring, leading to a dominant victory for the visitors against a struggling United side, which was reduced to ten men after captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off in the 42nd minute for a tackle on James Maddison. This loss leaves Manchester United in 12th place in the Premier League with just seven points after six matches, while Tottenham climbs to eighth with ten points.
Postecoglou praised his team’s performance, stating, “We started the game well, scored a great goal and probably should have had two or three. After the red card, we controlled the game well. Just an outstanding effort from all the lads.”
Tottenham opened the scoring in the third minute when defender Micky van de Ven set up Johnson for an easy tap-in, marking his fourth goal in four outings. “11 v 11, or 11 v 10, we completely dominated the game,” Johnson expressed.
The match continued to be a struggle for United and manager Erik ten Hag, who noted that conceding early affected his team’s confidence. “We have to accept this and get better. Focus on the next game,” he admitted.
Spurs extended their lead shortly after halftime when Martínez slipped, allowing Johnson to find Kulusevski, who finished skillfully past goalkeeper André Onana. Solanke then sealed the victory in the 77th minute, poking in a close-range goal after a corner kick situation.
As Tottenham fans celebrated, many United supporters chose to leave early, which led to chants from Spurs fans. Fernandes reflected on the match, indicating that the team failed to maintain composure and that the early red card exacerbated their difficulties.
Despite a couple of promising chances for United, including a shot hitting the post from Alejandro Garnacho, they struggled to find the back of the net, highlighting the frustration of the team’s setback.
