Data released by the Home Office highlights that Manchester United fans were arrested more than any other club in England and Wales last season. The report shows that there were 121 arrests among United supporters, surpassing local rivals Manchester City, which had 94 arrests, and West Ham with 77.
Notably, 49% of these arrests occurred during home games, with 34 attributed to public or violent disorder. This data marks a significant shift as West Ham had recorded the highest number of football-related arrests in the previous three seasons. Interestingly, overall football-related arrests dropped by 11% compared to the 2023-24 season, totaling 1,932, reflecting the first decrease since fans returned to stadiums post-COVID-19 pandemic.
The report also reveals that public disorder remains the most common reason for arrests, accounting for 32% of total incidents. Additionally, there was a notable increase in arrests for possession of Class A drugs, which rose to 19%, the highest rate since the introduction of new regulations in November 2022.
Banning orders, which prohibit individuals from attending matches, also saw a rise, with 2,439 currently in effect, an increase of 12% since the last season. Notably, West Ham held the highest number of these orders, which rose from 93 to 112, while Manchester United’s figures climbed from 89 to 108.
Hate crimes related to football incidents have surged, with 420 reported at matches, marking the highest level recorded in the Home Office data since 2017-18. The majority of these incidents pertained to race, followed by sexual orientation, religion, disability, and gender identity.
Policing minister Dame Diana Johnson remarked on the diligent work of police to maintain safety at football matches, emphasizing ongoing efforts to enhance security for fans. The introduction of further measures, such as expanding drug testing and supporting the UK Football Policing Unit, aims to ensure a safer environment for the millions who cherish the sport.
