Queens Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani is gaining momentum in the Democratic primary race to succeed Mayor Eric Adams, according to a recent poll by Emerson College, Pix11, and The Hill. The poll, conducted from May 23-26 among 606 Democratic primary voters, shows Cuomo leading with 35% to Mamdani’s 23% in the first round of ranked-choice voting. However, as per the simulation, Cuomo’s lead narrows in later rounds, reflecting Mamdani’s upward trajectory. In the final simulation round, Cuomo is projected to win 54% to Mamdani’s 46%, marking an eight-point gap.

The findings highlight a significant shift in support for Mamdani, who has increased his standing significantly since February. Spencer Kimball, the executive director of Emerson College Polling, highlighted that while Cuomo has maintained leadership in the polls, Mamdani’s supporters are heavily favoring him for second-choice votes, suggesting a burgeoning enthusiasm for his campaign. Notably, votes among younger demographics and those with college education—where Mamdani outperforms Cuomo—underscore a potential trend in the electorate.

Both campaigns have been actively advertising, with Mamdani’s strategy aiming to position himself as a progressive alternative to Cuomo, whom he has criticized as being aligned with powerful interests over the needs of working people. Conversely, Cuomo’s messaging focuses on his record of governance and attempts to draw attention to the city’s current challenges.

The race also sees other candidates like city Comptroller Brad Lander and Scott Stringer trailing significantly, while the poll explores general election dynamics should Cuomo emerge as the Democratic candidate against Republican Curtis Sliwa and independents, with Cuomo leading the general matchups.

Mamdani’s camp remains optimistic, claiming they are just beginning to reach their potential, with their extensive grassroots efforts already reaching over 600,000 doors. This grassroots mobilization could play a crucial role as the primary elections approach, indicating a vibrant and competitive political landscape ahead for New York City. The evolving dynamics in the Democratic primary reflect a broader engagement among voters, presenting an opportunity for change in the leadership of the city.
