Maloni Kunawave Boosts Crusaders’ 2025 Lineup in Super Rugby

One player that Crusaders fans are eagerly anticipating is Maloni Kunawave, who has joined the team as part of their 2025 Super Rugby squad. The 20-year-old is one of six promising young players to earn their first full contracts with the Crusaders, a group that also includes Toby Bell, Louie Chapman, Liam Jack, Manumaua Letiu, and James White.

Earlier this year, Kunawave had the opportunity to return to Fiji with the New Zealand Development side to participate in the prestigious McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, where he was able to reconnect with his grandmother after seven years apart. Leaving Fiji to pursue a scholarship in New Zealand at the age of 13, Kunawave has developed his skills significantly, culminating in his representation of New Zealand at the World Rugby Under 20 Championship earlier this year and a successful season with the Tasman Mako.

The Crusaders organization has high expectations for Kunawave, highlighting his dynamic playing style and Fijian flair as key attributes that will add a fresh approach to the backline. His addition is part of a revamped squad, which includes seasoned players like veteran winger Sevu Reece and George Bower, all eager to contribute to the team’s aspirations for a successful season ahead.

The 2025 Crusaders squad, boasting 38 players, will be led once again by captain David Havili as they prepare for a pivotal year. Notably, this will be the last season at Apollo Projects Stadium before they transition to the new One New Zealand Stadium. Coach Rob Penney is optimistic about the team’s depth and mix of experience, noting that the combination of youthful prospects like Kunawave and established stars should create a vibrant and competitive atmosphere.

With fans excited to witness this new chapter, the 2025 season promises to be both a celebration of Crusaders rugby’s legacy and an opportunity to see emerging talents shine on the field. Tickets for pre-season games are quickly selling out, underscoring the enthusiasm surrounding the team as they aim to defend their title and continue their storied success in Super Rugby.
