The celebration continues for the newly crowned Skipper Cup champions, Malolo Rugby Union. The team was honored today in Solevu Village, the same place where their inspiring journey began. Reflecting on their incredible rise, Malolo Rugby Union President Jone Tuilawa expressed that their victory is the result of years of sacrifice, resilience, and a strong belief in their vision despite facing significant challenges.
Tuilawa shared insights about the union’s humble origins, beginning in late 2019, highlighting how it was initially a one-man effort to establish the club. He reminisced on the early days when the team, based on the islands, had to endure exhausting daily travels by boat for matches—a daunting routine that almost stymied their ambitions. Despite setbacks, including the collapse of the club during the COVID-19 pandemic, Tuilawa worked tirelessly to re-establish the union in Nadi by 2022, uniting local players to rebuild Malolo Rugby from scratch.
He recognized the invaluable contributions of coaches and former players, including assistant coach Jiuta Lutumailagi and head coach Rupeni Nasiga, emphasizing that their effective communication and teamwork helped navigate the transition. Although Malolo faced disappointments in 2023, their determination intensified, culminating in an impactful performance in 2024 that saw them reach the Vanua Cup final and qualify for the prestigious Skipper Cup.
Malolo’s significant triumph this season symbolizes a historic milestone for the club, showcasing their remarkable journey from island roots and near collapse to standing tall as champions of Fiji’s premier provincial rugby competition. The team’s achievement not only serves as a source of pride for Malolo but also embodies the strength of community support, resilience, and hope, projecting a bright future for both the union and its supporters in Fijian rugby.
