Malolo Rugby Club has made history in Fijian rugby by securing the Skipper Cup title for the first time, triumphing over Naitasiri with a score of 41-26 in a thrilling final held at HFC Bank Stadium. This victory is not only a monumental achievement for the club but also serves as a significant milestone for the supportive community behind them.
The match began dramatically, with Malolo seizing an early advantage in the seventh minute when Tomasi Tawake scored an unconverted try. Naitasiri quickly struck back in the 20th minute, taking the lead with a converted try from Veniasi Vosawale, with Etonia Rokotuisawa successfully converting, making the score 7-5. Malolo responded vigorously, with Tawake scoring again in the 25th minute, although Naitasiri kept pace, scoring a try through Ilaisa Bete just four minutes later. By halftime, Naitasiri held a slim lead of 12-10.
The second half revealed Malolo’s determination as they surged ahead. Just two minutes into the half, a collaboration between Esala Nalobo and Douglas Daveta resulted in a try as well as a successful conversion, allowing Malolo to take the lead. Following that, Peniasi Ratu added another converted try three minutes later. The momentum for Malolo continued as both Joseva Tamata and Daveta scored, lifting their lead to a commanding 41-12.
In the face of adversity, Naitasiri showed resilience. Energized by their efforts, Sakaraia Soqonakalou and captain Jone Naqiri both scored converted tries at the 64th and 69th minutes, respectively, narrowing the score. However, a red card issued to Isaia Rugu in the 66th minute further challenged Naitasiri’s comeback efforts.
As the match drew to a close, a penalty kick from Tevita Ledua marked the final nail in the coffin for Naitasiri, ultimately solidifying Malolo’s historic victory.
Head coach Rupeni Nasiga shared his heartfelt sentiments about the win, stating, “Today, it is the first time for the team from Lawa to reach the final, and we are thankful for the support and guidance we received throughout the tournament.” He stressed the victory’s importance as a new beginning for the team, emphasizing their commitment to hard work and dedication.
Malolo’s triumph not only elevates the club’s standing but also highlights the strength of community support and perseverance, serving as an inspiration for future generations in Fijian rugby. As they celebrate their first Skipper Cup title, there is widespread hope for continued success, marking an exciting new chapter in their rugby story.
