Malolo Clinches Historic First Skipper Cup Title in Fiji Rugby

Malolo Rugby Club has etched its name in Fijian rugby history by claiming the Skipper Cup title for the first time, defeating Naitasiri 41-26 in a thrilling final held at HFC Bank Stadium. This momentous victory marks a significant achievement, not only for the club but also for the community supporting them.

The match unfolded with Malolo taking an early lead in the seventh minute through an unconverted try by Tomasi Tawake. Naitasiri responded in the 20th minute with a converted try from Veniasi Vosawale, notably kicking from Etonia Rokotuisawa, bringing the score to 5-7. Malolo countered again, with Tawake scoring another try in the 25th minute, but Naitasiri quickly followed up with a try from Ilaisa Bete just four minutes later. When the half-time whistle blew, Naitasiri held a slight edge at 12-10.

The second half showcased Malolo’s resilience as they stormed back. Just two minutes in, Esala Nalobo and Douglas Daveta teamed up to score a try and successfully convert it, extending Malolo’s lead. They stunned Naitasiri further when Peniasi Ratu scored another converted try three minutes later, followed by Joseva Tamata and Daveta each adding to the scoreboard, propelling Malolo to a commanding 41-12 lead.

However, Naitasiri wasn’t ready to concede, and inspired by their renewed energy, Sakaraia Soqonakalou and captain Jone Naqiri brought the game closer with two converted tries at the 64th and 69th minutes, narrowing the gap. Unfortunately for Naitasiri, a red card shown to Isaia Rugu in the 66th minute compounded their struggles.

As the clock wound down, Naitasiri’s miscalculation led to a penalty kick from Tevita Ledua, sealing Malolo’s historic victory and crowning them champions.

Reflecting on this remarkable win, Malolo head coach Rupeni Nasiga expressed deep gratitude, stating, “Today, it is the first time for the team from Lawa to reach the final, and we are thankful for the support and guidance we received throughout the tournament.” He emphasized the significance of their victory, noting it as a new dawn for the team, and highlighted their mission to embody the spirit of hard work and dedication.

The triumph of Malolo not only brings glory to the club but stands as a testament to the power of community support and perseverance, inspiring future generations in Fijian rugby. As they celebrate their first Skipper Cup title, there is a collective sense of hope for more achievements ahead, marking an exhilarating chapter in the history of their rugby journey.
