The Malian government has put an end to speculation regarding a potential single currency for the Confederation of Sahel States (AES). In a statement released on January 27, 2026, the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Mali refuted claims made by various media outlets and digital platforms that suggested an imminent roadmap for the launch of a common currency.

The ministry’s official communication emphasized that there has been no announcement regarding the circulation of a common currency or the finalization of any operational timeline for such a project. It stated, “No communication has been made by the Ministry of Economy and Finance announcing the upcoming circulation of a common currency or the completion of an operational calendar in this regard.”

According to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, decisions and orientations pertaining to AES member countries fall under established institutional frameworks, utilizing appropriate channels and mechanisms, which are subject to specific official communications.

In response to the spread of misinformation, Malian authorities have urged the media, analysts, and the public to remain vigilant. The ministry has called for reliance solely on official institutional sources for information regarding decisions made by the member states of the Confederation of Sahel States.

Furthermore, the statement reaffirms the ministry’s commitment to responsible communication that respects the aspirations of the AES populations and thanks the public for their cooperation in the fight against disinformation. This proactive approach reflects the government’s dedication to transparency and clarity regarding important financial matters, fostering trust and understanding among Sahel nations.
