MIAMI GARDENS, Florida – Miami Hurricanes wide receiver CJ Daniels has seen a surge of dedication and ambition from fellow teammate Malachi Toney, who eagerly sought his guidance even before they began their college careers. Toney, a transfer from LSU, reached out to Daniels shortly after his commitment, expressing his determination to learn and improve. Daniels remarked on Toney’s exceptional drive, stating, “I’ve never seen this from a young guy who’s still supposed to be a senior in high school, wanting to get better so bad. It’s really contagious.”
Toney has rapidly emerged as a standout player in college football, earning the FWAA Offensive Freshman of the Year title this season. He boasts an impressive 99 receptions, leading all freshmen nationally with over 1,000 receiving yards. His journey began at American Heritage High School, a notable football powerhouse located just a short drive from Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. The Hurricanes coaching staff, led by head coach Mario Cristobal, recognized Toney’s potential early on, offering him a scholarship during his freshman year of high school. Wide receivers coach Kevin Beard noted Toney’s proactive approach, recalling how the young athlete would reach out for advice after games. “When a kid calls you after their game and asks how [they] can get better? Whoa,” Beard said. Toney’s ability to absorb constructive criticism was remarkable and has helped him develop rapidly.
Despite being ranked as the 14th-best prospect in Miami’s recruiting class and reclassifying to forgo his senior year, Toney has impressed his teammates and coaches with his maturity and attitude. Quarterback Emory Williams highlighted Toney’s unique presence on the field, stating, “I’ve never seen a freshman like this… Toney’s a difference maker.”
His on-field performance has mirrored his determination, with Toney contributing significantly to the Hurricanes’ offense. He tallied six catches for 82 yards and a touchdown in his debut game and finished the season strong, notably catching five passes for 81 yards and a touchdown during a crucial Fiesta Bowl semifinal win against Ole Miss.
As Miami prepares to face undefeated Indiana in the College Football Playoff National Championship, Toney is poised to shine on the grand stage in front of family and friends from the local area. The matchup is historic, marking the first time a team will compete for a title in their home stadium, with the Hurricanes set to utilize their own locker room for the game. With a victory on the horizon, Toney has the chance to etch his name among the greats in the illustrious history of the Miami Hurricanes football program. Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson expressed his delight at Toney’s unexpected success, stating, “I don’t think anybody could have foreseen him being what he’s been. But I’m sure damn happy that he is.”
