A significant fire erupted at a warehouse in Oakland on Friday afternoon, resulting in extensive damage that spread to at least one adjacent building and several vehicles parked nearby. The Oakland Fire Department reported that the incident, which began at a facility registered to H&Q Furniture LLC located at 5309 E. 8th Avenue, escalated to a four-alarm fire by 5 p.m.
The incident captured attention as a large plume of smoke filled the Melrose neighborhood, situated east of Interstate Highway 880 and west of San Leandro Street. Approximately 75 firefighters were engaged in combating the blaze, which fire officials described as particularly challenging due to its location amidst commercial and residential structures, as well as multiple vehicles on the street.
Fire Chief Damon Covington highlighted the efforts of the fire crews, indicating that without their quick response, the situation could have quickly worsened, potentially affecting several blocks.
Reports from the scene suggested the presence of a marijuana cultivation operation within the warehouse, as indicated by an Oakland police officer who communicated with a woman leaving the burning structure. However, these initial claims regarding the fire’s cause have yet to be confirmed, and as of now, there have been no reports of injuries.
Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee issued a statement confirming that the fire is now under control and stressing the city’s relief that no injuries were reported.
This incident serves as a reminder of the vigilance needed in response to emergencies, highlighting the dedication of firefighting crews in preventing further disaster. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues into the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding it.
