Major Swimming Pool Recall: Are Your Kids Safe?

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is issuing a recall for approximately 5 million above-ground swimming pools due to a significant drowning risk. This decision comes following tragic incidents that resulted in the deaths of nine children over a 15-year period, highlighting the serious safety concerns associated with these products.

The recall specifically targets above-ground pools that are 48 inches tall or higher and utilize compression straps. These straps are designed to secure the pool by wrapping around its supporting poles. However, they can unintentionally create a foothold that children might use to climb in, potentially leading to drowning even when a ladder is removed.

Between 2007 and 2022, drowning incidents involving children under 3 years old have been reported in states including California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Missouri, all linked to pools accessed via these straps. Additionally, three separate incidents in 2011 and 2012 also involved children gaining access to the pools by utilizing the compression straps.

The affected pool models span several brands, including Bestway, Coleman, Intex, and Polygroup, and have been sold at major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Home Depot, and online platforms including Amazon. Prices for these pools range from about $400 to over $1,000.

Consumers who own these models are strongly urged to contact the respective companies for a free repair kit. CPSC recommends taking immediate precautions by ensuring that children cannot access the pool unattended or, if possible, draining the pool until the repair is made.

For further assistance, consumers can reach out to Bestway at 844-593-4003 or Intex at 800-549-8829 for more information about the recall and necessary steps to enhance safety.

By taking prompt action, families can prevent further tragedies and ensure the safety of children around potentially hazardous pool environments. This recall serves as a crucial reminder for all pool owners to remain vigilant and proactive with safety measures.
