Portland, Maine is set to experience a notable snowfall event that will unfold tonight, bringing several inches of snow to the region. While this month has seen minimal snowfall so far, conditions are primed for a shift midweek.

Starting tonight, snow is expected to move across the entire state, accumulating at least a few inches. The heaviest snowfall will occur after dark, with the initial wave anticipated to deliver moderate to heavy snow at a rate of up to an inch per hour. This will result in quickly snow-covered roads. By midnight, most areas will be blanketed in snow.

In southern and central Maine, snow is expected to taper off by dawn on Wednesday, resulting in a significant accumulation before plowing operations can make travel easier. However, eastern and northern Maine will continue to experience on-and-off snow throughout Wednesday, adding to the totals. For these areas, an additional few inches may accumulate during the day.

During the daytime hours, some breaks of sunshine could appear in southern Maine, with temperatures rising to near or above freezing. Meanwhile, scattered snow showers will persist in the eastern and northern regions, creating potentially slippery road conditions for the evening commute, particularly in Downeast Maine.

Snowfall totals are likely to range between 3 to 6 inches across most of the state, with Downeast Maine seeing higher amounts of 6 to 8 inches where snow continues throughout the day. By Thursday morning, the snow should be cleared, leading to a smooth commute with no lingering issues expected.

As winter sets in, this anticipated snowfall presents a reminder of the season’s beauty and the necessary precautions when traveling in snowy conditions.
