The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has initiated a new immigration enforcement operation in the state of Maine, named “Operation Catch of the Day.” This operation specifically targets criminal illegal migrants, with officials announcing several arrests on its first day, including individuals with convictions for aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and child endangerment. Assistant DHS Secretary Tricia McLaughlin attributed the need for this crackdown to the policies of Maine’s Democratic Governor, Janet Mills, and other local leaders identified as “sanctuary politicians.”

McLaughlin emphasized the administration’s stance under President Trump and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, stating that the federal government is committed to preventing criminal illegal aliens from threatening American citizens. However, it remains unclear how long ICE agents will be stationed in Maine and whether Customs and Border Protection agents from Minneapolis will also be reassigned there.

Maine’s Governor Mills, who is currently running for the U.S. Senate, has had a contentious relationship with the Trump administration, often responding to federal immigration policies. In light of the operation, U.S. Attorney for the District of Maine, Andrew Benson, advised that citizens’ right to protest must not escalate into violence, cautioning that aggressive actions against federal law enforcement will be prosecuted.

While there has been no immediate response from Mills regarding the ICE operation, she recently indicated that her administration has been proactive in preparing for potential federal enforcement. Mills has instructed the Maine State Police to work with local law enforcement to ensure safety and coordination during any impending operations. Emphasizing her commitment to maintaining civil rights, she urged the federal government to respect the dignity of Maine residents and to conduct any operations with consideration for community welfare.

In a pointed criticism of ICE tactics, Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline condemned the agency for its approach, describing it as driven by terror and intimidation rather than compassion for human welfare. He reaffirmed the city’s dedication to upholding the dignity of all residents, asserting that Lewiston will continue to support its neighbors through challenging times.

As Maine prepares for the impact of Operation Catch of the Day, there is a sense of hope that local authorities can ensure the safety and rights of its residents while navigating these federal actions. The community’s focus on peaceful protest and maintaining a respectful dialogue with federal authorities will be crucial as this operation unfolds.
