On Friday evening at 7:40 p.m., the National Weather Service (NWS) issued an updated flash flood warning for Madison County, set to remain in effect until 9:15 p.m. Doppler radar detected thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rainfall, with estimates indicating between 1 to 2 inches of rain had already fallen. While the heavy rain is expected to move out of the area, ongoing flash flooding is either currently occurring or expected to begin shortly. Particular concern has been raised regarding Kingsley Brook, which is deemed especially susceptible to flooding based on rainfall estimates. Flooding has already been reported on Hamilton Street.
Key locations impacted include Hamilton, Brookfield, Lebanon, Georgetown, Pierceville, Eaton, Hubbardsville, West Eaton, North Brookfield, and Sheds. The NWS warns that small creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, and other poorly drained regions are vulnerable to flash flooding. They strongly advise individuals to avoid flooded roads for safety, emphasizing that most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles.
To ensure safety during these conditions, the NWS has provided various flood safety recommendations tailored for regions prone to flooding. Should a flash flood warning be issued, it is crucial to take immediate action, moving to higher ground and adhering to local evacuation orders. It’s also advised to disconnect utilities and avoid basements or submerged areas to prevent electrical accidents. During flooding, anyone trapped should reach the highest point possible and contact emergency services.
Additionally, motorists are encouraged to practice safe driving during heavy rain. Guidelines include maintaining extended following distances, reducing speed, and being cautious of hydroplaning risks by sticking to middle lanes on multi-lane roads. When visibility is low, using headlights is crucial, and caution should be taken when approaching larger vehicles due to reduced visibility caused by tire spray.
While severe weather conditions can be alarming, by staying informed, prepared, and following safety protocols, individuals can significantly reduce risks and ensure their well-being during such events.
