The Macuata province in Fiji is poised to become a leading eco-tourism destination, marked by several exciting initiatives already underway. Advocates for tourism in the region emphasize the abundant natural and cultural resources present but highlight the urgent need for infrastructure improvements and enhanced coordination to meet international tourism standards.
Amelia Simmons, a representative from the Macuata Tourism Association, noted that popular sites such as Korovatu and Nubu are beginning to draw more visitors. Efforts to upgrade facilities in these areas are in progress, with the organization already supporting visitors, particularly expatriate Fijians from North America returning for religious observances at Nag Mandir. Furthermore, the Floating Island has been identified as a future attraction, with plans for building walking planks to protect the environment while establishing a traditional bure as a welcoming area for tourists.
A crucial part of this development is the active involvement of local landowners in the tourism planning process. Simmons reaffirmed the association’s dedication to collaborating closely with landowners at every stage of development, ensuring that their interests and needs are addressed.
Additionally, the Macuata Provincial Council is actively investigating tourism opportunities in the region, including attractions such as the Three Sisters Mountains and Tabia’s hot springs, which could further entice visitors. This forward-thinking approach aligns with a broader trend in Fiji’s Northern Division, where tourism is recognized as a key avenue for economic revitalization.
Earlier reports have noted similar progress, including a $3.1 million initiative aimed at boosting tourism in Macuata, as well as ongoing projects throughout the Northern Division that have garnered international attention and investment. Efforts supported by the World Bank are particularly focused on sustainable tourism practices that emphasize community involvement and economic stability.
With the Macuata area positioning itself for significant eco-tourism expansion, there is a positive outlook for achieving sustainable economic benefits. By enhancing infrastructure, fostering strong engagement with local communities, and maintaining a commitment to environmental conservation, there is a promising opportunity for the region not only to attract visitors but also to enable substantial growth for its local population.
