Macuata Community Rally for Inmate Reintegration in Fiji

Macuata Care Committee Pushes for Inmate Reintegration Across Fiji

The Macuata Care Committee is appealing to the chiefs and residents of the Macuata province to extend their support to local natives currently incarcerated. This initiative, led by the committee under the Macuata Provincial Council, includes planned visits to the Suva and Vaturekuka correctional facilities to engage with inmates.

Moritikai Waqawaqa, Chair of the Committee, emphasized that the push to support inmates has gained momentum following the 2023 Yellow Ribbon celebration in Labasa. The committee is urging the Provincial Council to prioritize the reintegration of inmates upon their return to society. Notably, the number of Macuata inmates at Vaturekuka has seen a decline, dropping from 22 to 14 as of October 21, which reflects the ongoing success of their program focused on inmate support and preventive measures aimed at reducing future prison entries.

To improve the reintegration process, the committee is collaborating with the Officer-in-Charge at Vaturekuka to enhance release procedures. They have proposed that the Provincial Office be informed six months in advance of any inmate’s release, allowing for better coordination and support as these individuals transition back into their communities. Such measures are crucial not only for the welfare of the former inmates but also for their families.

Ratu Orisi Vukicanavanua, Chair of the Provincial Council, underscored the importance of collective action from all stakeholders within the province to tackle these issues effectively. Additionally, the Macuata Care Committee plans to extend its outreach, with visits to correctional facilities in Levuka, Taveuni, Natabua, and Ba, to gather further information on inmates hailing from the Macuata region.

This initiative is part of a broader movement in Fiji aimed at enhancing rehabilitation and social reintegration for former inmates. In alignment with ongoing efforts within the Fiji Corrections Service, these initiatives present a promising outlook for fostering community support and rehabilitating inmates, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive society. The commitment shown by the Macuata Care Committee and local leaders reflects a hopeful step towards reducing recidivism and improving the lives of those who have faced incarceration.
