Macklemore has been removed from the lineup of the inaugural Neon City Festival in Las Vegas, just days after being announced as a headliner. The festival organizers cited “unforeseen circumstances” for his withdrawal but did not specify a reason.
The change comes shortly after Macklemore made headlines by expressing a strong anti-American sentiment during a performance at a pro-Palestinian benefit concert, where he shouted, “Fuck America.” This remark was met with applause from the audience in Seattle.
The festival lineup was revealed on September 19, with Macklemore’s controversial comment occurring on September 21. By September 24, he was no longer scheduled to perform at the festival.
In response to the situation, Macklemore released a statement on September 25, acknowledging that his thoughts are not always communicated in a perfect manner. He expressed regret that his comments at the concert, intended to raise awareness for Palestine, were overshadowed by his words.
The rapper criticized the U.S. government’s involvement in the conflict in the Middle East, noting that he has faced consequences such as losing endorsements and business relationships. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting a free Palestine.
Macklemore has been a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights during the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, having signed an open letter demanding a ceasefire and accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza. In May 2024, he released a protest song titled “Hind’s Hall,” which supports student protesters and directs proceeds to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.
The Neon City Festival is set to take place in downtown Las Vegas from November 22-24, featuring other headliners such as Alison Wonderland, Neon Trees, Russell Dickerson, and Seven Lions.
