Mac McClung Lands Multi-Year Pacers Deal Amid Injury-Heavy Season

Mac McClung, a player better known for his high-flying dunks during NBA All-Star Weekend than for a stable NBA career, has secured a permanent spot in the league with the Indiana Pacers. The team announced on Tuesday that they have signed the 6-foot-2 guard, a three-time champion of the NBA dunk contest, to a multiyear contract, marking his first standard deal after years of navigating 10-day, two-way, and Exhibit 10 contracts in the G League.

At the Pacers’ practice facility, McClung, now 26, reflected on his long journey: “I came up short a ton of times in this game, and something in my soul, thank God, just put a resilience in me. I believe I’m built for this stage and God gave me an opportunity, and hopefully I can make the most of it.” The Pacers are counting on McClung to help fill the gaps left by several injured players, including their star guard Tyrese Haliburton, who is out for the season due to an Achilles injury sustained during the NBA Finals.

With a growing injury list that includes recent setbacks for key players like T.J. McConnell and Andrew Nembhard, the Pacers need McClung’s contributions, especially as they adjust to an up-tempo playing style. Head Coach Rick Carlisle praised McClung’s aggressiveness and fitness, which are critical at this time.

McClung began his basketball journey at Georgetown, where he gained national attention for his scoring ability and impressive dunks, breaking a Virginia High School League single-season scoring record previously held by Allen Iverson. Following a season at Texas Tech, McClung declared for the 2021 NBA Draft but went unselected. His early career included stints with the Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago Bulls’ G League teams, where he showcased his talent well enough to earn the G League’s Rookie of the Year title and later become the MVP for the 2023-24 season.

While McClung has appeared in only six NBA games, his ability to make an impact in the G League has not gone unnoticed. Teammates and coaches have highlighted his basketball IQ and competitive spirit. “He’s a great player, and I think his IQ allows him to pick up things on the fly really quickly,” remarked Pacers guard Ben Sheppard after McClung’s first practice with the team.

McClung’s resilience paid off when he earned a contract after impressing during a tryout with the Pacers, demonstrating his determination to carve out a long-term spot in the league. The Osceola Magic described him as “committed, determined and a winner,” illustrating the strong support and expectation surrounding him as he embarks on this new chapter with Indiana.

As the Pacers navigate a challenging start to the season, McClung’s newfound role brings hope and excitement, not just for himself, but for the Pacers as they aim to overcome adversity and find success on the court. His journey serves as a testament to perseverance and the power of seizing opportunities, inspiring fans and players alike.
