Lynx Extend WNBA Finals Drama with Thrilling Game 4 Comeback

MINNEAPOLIS — The outcome many were hoping for has finally arrived.

The Minnesota Lynx managed to avoid elimination by defeating the New York Liberty 82-80 on Friday night, ensuring that the series would extend to the full five games. This season has been remarkable, and it’s fitting that it will conclude in a thrilling finale.

The Lynx displayed a true team effort. While Napheesa Collier is their standout player, it was the collective contributions that secured them the No. 2 seed and a place in the Finals. Every player on the team gives their all, and perseverance is a hallmark of their play.

“This team has consistently shown the ability to believe in themselves and each other from the outset,” said Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve.

Collier had a strong performance with 14 points and nine rebounds, just shy of a double-double. Additionally, Kayla McBride and Courtney Williams had significant contributions, with Williams making an impact in her own unique style. Alanna Smith and Bridget Carleton each scored 12 points, ensuring all of Minnesota’s starters reached double figures.

“This group can handle the ups and downs of the game,” Reeve noted. “What we have is special.”

The WNBA Finals will be seeing its first five-game series since 2019, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion.

In Game 4, several players stood out:

WINNERS

Alanna Smith

Smith put forth an impressive effort. Just two days after a tough fall in Game 3, she played through significant back pain, contributing 12 points, seven rebounds, a block, and two steals and assists. Her defensive work, particularly against Jonquel Jones, was crucial.

“Alanna has consistently put herself in key positions for us,” Reeve said. “Her ability to step up for her team is invaluable.”

Despite visibly struggling with her movements, Smith logged 30 minutes on the court without any restrictions in playtime imposed by the coaching staff.

Bridget Carleton

Carleton’s game-winning shots were well-deserved recognition for her hard work throughout the season. Described as a “hustle play player” by Reeve, Carleton made pivotal plays in the final moments, including a crucial rebound attempt that led to free throws and ultimately the win. She also finished the game with 12 points.

Spike Lee

The famed New York basketball fan will witness the Liberty’s championship quest on their home court, likely seated courtside, an experience he eagerly anticipated.

A Bar of Their Own

Reeve donned a shirt from “A Bar of Their Own” during the game, a Minneapolis establishment that exclusively showcases women’s sports. She acknowledged the support the bar provides for women in sports, highlighting its growing popularity.

“I’ve heard so many great things about it,” Reeve said. “It’s amazing to see the city rally around this team.”

LOSERS

Players in foul trouble

Star player Breanna Stewart faced challenges on the court, finishing with 11 points from only 5-of-21 shooting, hindered by foul troubles. The Lynx effectively pressured her throughout.

Sandy Brondello’s wallet

The Liberty coach expressed frustration over the officiating, making it clear she felt her team was getting the short end of the stick. She pointed out discrepancies in fouls called and demanded fair treatment on the court.

“It’s about being fair,” Brondello insisted. “If there’s contact, it should be called as a foul.”

Brondello also encountered an issue with a timeout not being granted when she needed it, which contributed to their struggles in the final moments of the game.

Drama seekers

After the game, rumors circulated regarding a supposed message from former UConn coach Geno Auriemma, which would have created an interesting narrative given both Collier and Stewart played under him. Collier dispelled the notion, stating, “Looks like I’m going to have to text him about some things now,” humorously addressing the drama.

Ultimately, the supposed rivalry remains unconfirmed, and the much-anticipated reunion among teammates can proceed without complications.
