Lynchburg has recently secured its place on U.S. News & World Report’s list of the top 10 cities ideal for retirement, being ranked at number 10 among 250 cities across the country. A key contributing factor to its high rating is the city’s affordability, particularly in terms of housing costs, which are lower than the national average for both homeowners and renters.
Local officials believe that Lynchburg offers more than just financial benefits for retirees. Anna Bentson, the communications and public engagement director for the City of Lynchburg, emphasized that rankings fail to capture the genuine quality of life and the community spirit prevalent in the city. “We hope that appearing on the list will encourage people to come here and experience Lynchburg for themselves,” she stated. This includes engaging with local small businesses, attending events at nearby colleges and universities, and really getting a grasp of what the city has to offer.
Bentson highlighted that Lynchburg’s appeal extends beyond affordability. The city boasts beautiful parks and trails, a robust small business community, and a dynamic arts culture, all of which help create an inviting atmosphere for retirees seeking a vibrant, engaging environment in which to enjoy their later years. By emphasizing these qualities, Lynchburg aims to attract new residents who are looking for a welcoming community to call home.
