In recent years, alcohol collectors have spent upwards of a million dollars at auctions and private sales to acquire especially coveted bottles of liquor and wine.
In January of last year, Vietnamese collector Viet Nguyen Dinh Tuan spent more than $2 million on a rare bottle of cognac in a private sale. This was not Viet’s first high-value alcohol purchase; his spirits collection is estimated to be worth more than $190 million, according to the Guardian.
While many people can enjoy a good bottle of wine or liquor for less than $100, for connoisseurs and collectors, high-end alcohol is an investment on par with fine art or luxury cars. Whiskey and wine, in particular, are known to improve with age, adding to their value over time.
