Legendary horse racing trainer D. Wayne Lukas has been hospitalized in Louisville, prompting him to step away from training. The 89-year-old is currently dealing with a severe infection and has opted not to pursue aggressive treatment. Instead, Lukas plans to return home to spend time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. His family has requested privacy during this challenging time.

In the meantime, Lukas’ horses will be cared for by his longtime assistant, Sebastian “Bas” Nicholl, who has been with him since 2002. Lukas is a Hall of Fame inductee in both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing, recognized as a pivotal figure within the sport.
