Lucid Group is setting its sights on a groundbreaking achievement in the automotive industry, aiming to introduce advanced self-driving capabilities that would allow its vehicles to operate autonomously under normal conditions. Announced on Tuesday, the electric vehicle manufacturer described this innovative driving experience as “mind-off,” enabling occupants to engage in activities like playing cards or watching TV while the car takes care of the road.
To develop this cutting-edge technology, Lucid plans to utilize Nvidia’s “Drive AV” platform alongside a suite of sensors, including cameras, radar, and lidar. These tools will enhance the vehicle’s ability to navigate and interpret its environment effectively, significantly improving overall safety and performance.
During a statement made to CNBC, Marc Winterhoff, the interim CEO of Lucid, mentioned that while the introduction of this system is firmly planned for the coming years, an exact date remains undecided, with a clear indication that it will not launch in 2026. The initial rollout will focus on Lucid’s upcoming midsize vehicle, with intentions to expand the technology across the company’s other models.
Winterhoff emphasized the importance of leveraging Nvidia’s existing technologies to accelerate the development process. He acknowledged that creating a system from the ground up would be time-consuming and costly. As Lucid works toward this ambitious goal, the company is also committed to enhancing automated features in its current lineup, which includes the Air sedan and Gravity SUV, in collaboration with Nvidia.
