The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has issued a stern warning to the public regarding the hazardous practice of throwing or splashing water at moving vehicles. This alert follows a viral video showing children engaging in this reckless behavior, which raises significant safety concerns for all parties involved.
LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa stressed the serious implications of these actions, highlighting that they pose considerable risks not only to drivers and their passengers but also to the children involved. “Large vehicles, particularly buses, require total focus to ensure safe operation, especially when they are transporting others. A momentary distraction can lead to catastrophic results,” he cautioned.
Rokosawa pointed out that what may appear to be harmless fun can quickly escalate into a dangerous situation. A driver caught off guard or impeded by water may lose control of their vehicle, jeopardizing their own passengers, other road users, and pedestrians. He emphasized that the children engaging in these antics are also putting themselves in precarious positions.
The CEO clarified that such disruptive behaviors can be classified as offenses under existing regulations, which may lead to legal consequences for offenders. He urged parents, guardians, and community members to actively educate children about the dangers of playing near roadways, especially during school holidays when outdoor activities are more prevalent.
Additionally, Rokosawa called on motorists to maintain calm and attentiveness when encountering such incidents, advising against reactions that could exacerbate the situation. This appeal for vigilance is part of an overall effort to create a safer environment for both road users and children during holiday periods. By raising awareness and fostering responsible behavior, the community can contribute to safer roadways for everyone.
