Individuals and companies in the petroleum sector, particularly those requiring a Dangerous Goods (DG) Class 3 license, can now receive their certification through a qualified private entity accredited by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). Michael’s Safety Training & Consultancy Services, led by certified trainer Michael Fong, offers this essential training following LTA’s endorsement in March 2023.

With over 25 years of extensive experience in DG Class 3 driver training, Mr. Fong brings a wealth of knowledge to the program, having received certification from Shell Australia. His expertise encompasses various critical areas, including dangerous goods handling, storage, transportation procedures, as well as confined space entry and response to marine oil spills.

Claiming to be the only DG Class 3 trainer in Fiji and the Pacific region, Mr. Fong has designed the training specifically for operators in the petroleum industry. It targets private operators and corporate entities involved in the transportation of Class 3 products such as benzene, diesel, kerosene, and Jet A1, all of which are highly flammable or combustible.

The training is divided into three parts: theoretical classroom instruction covering risk assessments, fire extinguisher use, truck components, driver behavior, and defensive driving, alongside practical sessions that focus on the features and functions of petroleum tankers as well as safe discharge procedures on-site.

Mr. Fong emphasized the critical role of understanding vehicle operations for DG drivers, citing the high risks associated with transporting hazardous materials. He noted, “As a DG driver, it’s imperative that the driver thoroughly understands his or her vehicle in order for him or her to drive and deliver,” highlighting the importance of awareness, mental and physical fitness in ensuring safe driving practices.

Following the initial slow response to the training’s launch, Mr. Fong reported an increasing interest from companies in Labasa and Savusavu. He has also engaged with professional bodies such as the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF) and the Fiji Human Resources Institute (FHRI) to raise awareness about the training.

Mr. Fong’s message extends beyond DG Class 3 drivers. He advocates for accountability and responsibility in driving, noting the importance of maintaining vehicle safety standards to protect both drivers and the public. With a strong focus on training and awareness, Michael’s Safety Training & Consultancy Services aims to enhance safety within the petroleum industry in Fiji.
