In an impressive display of skill, LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier led the Tigers to a 44-31 victory over the Baylor Bears in the Texas Bowl held in Houston on Tuesday afternoon. Nussmeier threw for 304 yards and recorded three touchdowns, wrapping up the Tigers’ season with a commendable overall record of 9-4. Looking ahead, LSU is set to commence the 2025 season on August 30 against Clemson.
The game started on a strong note for LSU, as they effortlessly advanced the ball downfield. Early in the first quarter, Nussmeier connected with freshman tight end Trey’Dez Green to secure a first down on a crucial 4th-and-5 play. Following that, Nussmeier found Green again in the end zone for a touchdown, giving LSU a 7-0 advantage.
As Baylor attempted to gain traction in the game, they faced a setback when LSU’s freshman linebacker Davhon Keys intercepted Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson, returning the interception 40 yards for a touchdown which pushed the Tigers’ lead to 14-0.
Baylor managed to respond with a touchdown of their own, yet LSU quickly retook control thanks to another touchdown pass from Nussmeier, extending their lead to 21-7. The Tigers continued to capitalize on offensive opportunities, including another touchdown from Nussmeier to Green, increasing their lead to 28-7.
Despite a temporary momentum shift towards Baylor, with a touchdown rush narrowing the score to 28-14, LSU’s Zavion Thomas ignited excitement by returning a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, concluding the first half with a renewed 34-14 lead.
In the second half, the back-and-forth continued, yet LSU maintained their advantage, with Nussmeier contributing to a fourth touchdown by handing off to Josh Williams. A field goal later extended the lead to 44-24.
Although Baylor made a late push with another touchdown, the result remained in LSU’s favor, securing a noteworthy win in the Texas Bowl.
