LSU Athletics has officially parted ways with football head coach Brian Kelly, as announced by Director of Athletics Scott Woodward on Sunday. The separation comes after a disappointing season, with the Tigers currently holding a 5-3 record and a 2-3 mark in SEC play, following a recent loss to No. 3 Texas A&M.
In his statement, Woodward reflected on the initial hopes for Kelly’s tenure, which began four years ago, expressing gratitude for the support from the LSU Board of Supervisors and Interim President Matt Lee in reaching this decision. “The success at the level that LSU demands simply did not materialize,” he stated, emphasizing the need for change in light of recent performances.
During Kelly’s time at LSU, the team achieved a 34-14 record, with notable victories, including three consecutive bowl game wins. Kelly’s leadership led the Tigers to their only SEC Championship game appearance in 2022. He also oversaw quarterback Jayden Daniels, who emerged as a star and secured the Heisman Trophy, along with being selected as the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft.
Notably, Kelly is recognized as the winningest active coach in NCAA Football, boasting 323 career victories and a strong home game record of 23-3 in Tiger Stadium, particularly thriving with a 20-2 record in night games.
Going forward, associate head coach and running backs coach Frank Wilson will serve as the interim head coach for the rest of the season. Woodward remarked on the significance of maintaining high standards at LSU, expressing confidence in the university’s ability to attract top coaching talent and emphasizing the need for a leader who resonates with the culture and community of LSU Football.
With the search for a new head coach underway, Woodward encouraged the LSU community to rally behind the student-athletes and remaining coaching staff as they navigate the rest of the season. The commitment to excellence at LSU remains steadfast, aiming for a brighter future for the football program.
