LSU Dual-Sport Star Trey’Dez Green Teeters Between Football and Basketball

Trey’Dez Green, a standout athlete at LSU, has successfully managed the dual challenge of competing in both football and basketball, a rarity in collegiate sports. Standing at 6 feet 6 inches, Green has made his mark on the football field as a tight end while also showcasing his skills as a forward on the basketball team.

Recently, Green’s focus has shifted predominantly towards football, where he has been excelling under the guidance of head coach Brian Kelly. During the SEC Coaches Teleconference, Kelly emphasized the importance of developing Green’s skills as a football player while leaving the door open for him to return to basketball if he chooses. Kelly stated, “My job is to develop him as a football player. And he’s been amazing, he’s locked in, focused, taking care of his academics, and coming here every day with a great attitude about playing the game.”

In his limited time on the basketball court last season, Green participated in six games, averaging nearly seven minutes and contributing a total of 11 points, 10 blocks, and three rebounds. His best performances came against Texas and Auburn, where he demonstrated his potential in brief stints.

In contrast, Green’s football statistics are more impressive. Over the past seven games, he has recorded 15 receptions for 210 yards and three touchdowns, with a significant boost in production occurring in the last two games against South Carolina and Vanderbilt, where he tallied 193 yards and two touchdowns. This surge could signify a growing connection between him and quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.

Looking ahead, Green faces a crucial match-up against the Texas A&M Aggies, currently ranked No. 3 in the nation. A victory in this rivalry game could rejuvenate LSU’s season and highlight Green’s developing role in their offense.

On the basketball front, head coach Matt McMahon is set to kick off the season on November 3, leaving room for the possibility of Green rejoining the squad post-football season. Should Green opt to return to basketball, his involvement could occur during the SEC play, presenting an interesting scenario for LSU’s athletic programs.

With both sports seasons in play, the coming weeks promise to be exciting for Green as he navigates his future in college athletics. His talent in both football and basketball showcases the diverse skill set that defines a true athlete, and his commitment to excellence in whichever sport he pursues will undoubtedly be a source of inspiration for many.
