Winter weather has created significant travel challenges across the Lowcountry on Wednesday morning as icy roads and bridges lead to extensive traffic delays for commuters. The North Charleston Police Department has reported hazardous conditions, including slippery roads and dense fog. A Freeze Fog Advisory remains in effect for Charleston and tidal Berkeley counties until 9 a.m., warning motorists about the risks of patchy black ice and slick spots, particularly on bridges and overpasses.
This morning, multiple accidents have already occurred, notably on I-526 around the Don Holt Bridge. The Charleston Police Department noted the closure of the Cosgrove Bridge in both directions at approximately 7:14 a.m. due to a multi-vehicle crash caused by the icy conditions. Further complications arose on the westbound side of the Don Holt Bridge, which has also been closed following another multi-vehicle incident. Traffic on I-526 is heavily affected, with the eastbound lanes near Virginia Avenue completely blocked off.
At present, commuting times from West Ashley to Mount Pleasant along 526 eastbound are extraordinarily lengthy, taking around 106 minutes as of 6:40 a.m. Given the severe weather conditions, authorities strongly advise drivers to exercise caution on the roads and allow ample time to reach their destinations, highlighting the importance of road safety during such adverse weather.
