Governor Jeff Landry of Louisiana has formally requested the deployment of up to 1,000 National Guard members to address significant crime rates in urban centers across the state. In a letter to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Governor Landry highlighted the need for additional support to bolster law enforcement efforts in high-crime areas like Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Shreveport. This request comes as law enforcement agencies face manpower shortages, impacting their ability to effectively combat crime.

The proposed mission for the Louisiana National Guard includes supplementing law enforcement presence, providing logistical and communication support, and securing critical infrastructure. Governor Landry emphasized these efforts as part of an ongoing initiative to decrease crime rates, noting, “Federal partnerships in our toughest cities have worked, and now we are taking the next step by bringing in the National Guard. This mission is about saving lives and protecting families.”

The deployment request is for an activation period through the end of the 2026 fiscal year under Title 32, United States Code, Section 502(f). Governor Landry assured that National Guard members would adhere to force-use regulations and prioritize community outreach to maintain public trust.

Louisiana Congresswoman Julia Letlow expressed her support for the governor’s request, acknowledging the public’s desire for enhanced safety measures in cities such as Baton Rouge. The specific timing and locations for troop deployment are yet to be confirmed, pending further details.

Governor Landry’s proposal underscores a commitment to restoring law and order in Louisiana amidst rising incidents of homicides, carjackings, and gang-related activities, which are reportedly higher than the national average. As planning unfolds, both the state and federal governments are keen to address these public safety concerns thoroughly and effectively.
