In Los Angeles, a truck driver was apprehended after dangerously speeding through a street crowded with demonstrators advocating for the Iranian people’s rights. The incident occurred on Sunday as marchers were participating in a protest against the Iranian regime’s repression and in solidarity with ongoing protests in Iran.

As the U-Haul box truck barreled down Veteran Avenue, demonstrators were forced to scramble to avoid being hit. While one individual was struck, fortunately, there were no serious injuries reported, according to local police. The driver was stopped several blocks away, leading to a significant police presence responding to the chaotic situation. Footage captured by news helicopters showed officers intervening to protect the driver from the demonstrators who were pursuing the truck.

The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that two people were evaluated but declined further medical treatment following the incident. With the city housing the largest Iranian community outside of Iran, the outpouring of support for the protesters remained strong throughout the day.

Initially, police allowed the protest to proceed but later issued a dispersal order. By the evening, only about 100 protesters remained, as local authorities worked to clear the area.

This rally in Los Angeles was part of a larger global movement to support the Iranian people, sparked by protests in Iran that began on December 28 due to economic frustrations surrounding the faltering value of the Iranian rial. What began as economic protests quickly transformed into widespread antigovernment demonstrations, reminiscent of the significant unrest following the tragic death of Mahsa Amini in late 2022.

The latest reports from Iranian state media indicate that the unrest has resulted in the loss of lives among security personnel, with at least 109 confirmed deceased. Opposition activists, however, suggest that the number of demonstrators lost is considerably higher, with hundreds reported dead amidst the ongoing turmoil.

The spirit of solidarity shown in cities worldwide, including Paris, Berlin, and Istanbul, reflects a growing international concern for the plight of the Iranian people, underscoring the importance of support for civil rights and democratic movements globally.
