Brook Lopez shares a deep connection with the Clippers, a team he admired as a child growing up in Southern California. His recent signing marks a significant shift for both Lopez and the franchise, which is now focused on winning and assembling the right talent.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of a Summer League game against the Lakers, Lopez expressed his excitement about joining a franchise that has made considerable progress over the years. “It’s crazy to see, but it’s very cool — seeing the climb, the ascent,” he remarked, noting the stark contrast between the state of the team in his youth and its current competitive positioning.
Lopez chose the Clippers over a return to the Bucks, with whom he played for seven seasons, and opted against signing with the Lakers. He inked a two-year, $18 million deal with the Clippers, drawn by the opportunity to play alongside stars like Kawhi Leonard and James Harden, as well as his prior teammate Ivica Zubac. His rapport with Tyronn Lue, the Clippers’ head coach, and Lawrence Frank, the president of basketball operations, also played a crucial role in his decision.
Acknowledging the skills and talent within the Clippers roster, Lopez stated, “They’ve been a great team for quite a while now… There is a great chance to win a championship here.” At 37, Lopez is coming off a strong season with the Bucks where he averaged 13 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game.
Although Lopez has been a starting center throughout his career, he is open to a different role with the Clippers, likely coming off the bench. He emphasized his readiness to contribute in whichever capacity necessary to ensure team success. “I’m just trying to come in and help the team win,” he said.
Lopez believes he and Zubac could form a potent combination on the court, with both players bringing unique strengths that complement each other. He envisions exploiting their size advantage and enhancing the team’s defensive capabilities, while also creating offensive opportunities.
His admiration extended to the Clippers’ new Intuit Dome, which he visited during a game last season, further solidifying his enthusiasm about joining the organization. The welcoming gesture from Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and the prospect of winning have made Lopez optimistic about the future.
This partnership comes at a pivotal time for the Clippers, as they aim to make significant strides in the competitive landscape of the NBA. Lopez’s experience and skills could provide valuable depth and versatility to the team.
