Deputies in Snohomish County are currently investigating incidents of looting in areas recently affected by significant flooding due to an atmospheric river that swept through the region. The chaos brought on by the heavy rains has prompted concerns about safety and crime in these vulnerable communities.

On the morning of December 13, deputies received reports around 11 a.m. of individuals using boats and kayaks in a restricted zone near Marsh Road and Lowell Larimer Road, which raised red flags concerning potential looting activities. While the deputies were able to engage with the individuals on the scene, they initially did not find any confirmed victims of crimes.

Later, however, a homeowner from the flooded area returned to check on their property and discovered that their belongings had been vandalized and some items were missing. Fortunately, the homeowner was able to confront the kayakers, resulting in the recovery of their possessions. This incident highlights the challenges residents face while trying to reclaim their lives and restore their properties after the devastation caused by the floods.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office has underscored the necessity for homeowners to secure their valuables and suggested the use of security cameras to deter potential thefts and assist law enforcement in documenting incidents. Keeping records of serial numbers for valuable items was also recommended as a proactive approach to help police track any stolen goods.

Authorities continue to urge community members to obey road closure signs and steer clear of flooded areas. The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that individuals affected by the disaster have already endured enough hardship and should not have to face the threat of theft in their time of recovery.
