After undergoing three knee surgeries and being sidelined for over two years, Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball made a notable return to the court. He participated in his first NBA game since January 14, 2022, during a preseason matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The United Center crowd welcomed him back with a loud ovation as he entered the game and swiftly made an impact by sinking a corner three-pointer.
In his return, Ball finished the game with 10 points, one assist, and one rebound, shooting 4-of-6 from the floor in just 15 minutes of play—slightly under the restrictions set for his return. The Bulls honored him with the game ball, marking this significant moment in his career.
Reflecting on his recovery process, Ball described it as “long, really long,” but noted it progressed more quickly than he anticipated. He recalled the daunting advice he received about a lengthy recovery period following his third surgery, but expressed relief now that it’s behind him.
Ball’s journey back began with a meniscus injury to his left knee in January 2022, which led to his first surgery. However, complications arose, requiring additional procedures that ultimately sidelined him for the entirety of last season. Over the past three years, he has only played in 35 games.
Despite the challenging setbacks, Ball remains optimistic about contributing to the Bulls’ success. He averaged a career-high 14.6 points, along with 5.7 assists and 4.8 rebounds during his last full season with the New Orleans Pelicans in 2020-21.
He acknowledged that his body has changed due to the injuries but believes he can still be effective on the court, stating his determination to continue playing.
The Bulls’ plans for Ball’s utilization this season remain uncertain, particularly as he reacclimates to the game. He has experienced some knee soreness during the preseason, a situation he and the team plan to monitor closely throughout the season.
While he may not be the same player he once was, Ball has successfully returned to basketball, marking a significant first step in his comeback journey.
