In a triumphant return to the NBA, Chicago Bulls point guard Lonzo Ball wowed fans at the United Center Wednesday night after a 2.5-year hiatus due to severe knee issues, receiving a standing ovation from the audience.
Ball’s struggle with chronic knee pain began during the 2021-22 season, leading to three surgeries and extensive rehabilitation. He made his long-awaited comeback midway through the first quarter, impressively sinking a 3-pointer from the left corner on his first attempt.
In just 15 minutes on the court, Ball scored 10 points, shooting 4-of-6, contributing to the Bulls’ narrow 125-123 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Following the game, Ball expressed relief and excitement about being back, noting that he did not feel any discomfort in his knee during play for the first time in 1,006 days. “That’s a positive thing,” he remarked. “I felt like I was moving great. So now it’s just about building. Just continue to do it night in and night out.”
Ball’s comeback is regarded as one of the most remarkable in NBA history. Before being sidelined, he averaged 13 points and 5.1 assists during his first season with the Bulls, with his last game occurring on January 14, 2022. His recovery included a critical cartilage transplant surgery in March 2023 aimed at preserving his basketball career.
To commemorate his return, Ball’s teammates surprised him with a game ball as a token of support and recognition of his struggles. “I had a goal to get back on the court,” he stated. “And I knew it was a long journey, a long process. But it all paid off because this is what I was looking forward to. I’m just glad it’s here now and I can finally go out and do what I love to do.”
