Long Beach is set to undergo a planned internet outage this week as part of a significant upgrade to its internet infrastructure aimed at improving network reliability and performance. The outage will occur from 11 p.m. on Friday until 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 11-12.
The initiative is being spearheaded by the Long Beach Technology and Innovation Department’s Network Services Division, which will be transitioning core internet services to new routers. This upgrade is crucial in light of recent issues experienced by the city, including a temporary website outage on June 19, which prompted officials to work closely with their internet service provider to restore access.
During this upgrade, residents may experience intermittent internet access along with disruptions to city-provided Wi-Fi services. This will affect the accessibility of the city’s official website, longbeach.gov, as well as public customer service and payment portals. However, the Long Beach Utilities Department website, lbutilities.org, is expected to remain functional, though links to the main city webpages will be temporarily interrupted.
City officials reassured residents that the planned outage will not impact operations at the Emergency Communications Center, and there will be no expected delays in responses from police and fire services. Residents are encouraged to continue using 9-1-1 for emergencies, and 562-435-6711 for non-emergency city services.
This upgrades are designed to bolster the city’s resilience against potential service disruptions. By enabling a seamless transition to an alternative internet provider in the event of an outage, Long Beach aims to fortify its internet services against future disruptions.
These proactive steps reflect the city’s commitment to enhancing its technological infrastructure, promoting a more reliable and efficient network for its residents. Overall, this upgrade represents an important advancement for Long Beach, as it seeks to mitigate digital interruptions and improve the overall connectivity for its community.
