Questions regarding passenger loading practices during adverse weather conditions have gained significant attention following a maritime incident involving a fibreglass vessel that was transporting passengers to the Lomaiviti Princess XII last week.
The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has confirmed that it is reviewing not only the condition and operation of the fibreglass boat, which reportedly capsized, but also the loading protocols associated with the Lomaiviti Princess XII during rough sea conditions.
According to a media statement released by the MSAF, the incident took place on Thursday, January 15, as the smaller boat was ferrying passengers to the inter-island vessel amid challenging weather. Although specific operational details are scarce, the authority has acknowledged concerns that loading activities may have continued despite the presence of unsafe weather conditions.
Maritime safety experts have consistently highlighted that transferring passengers from small boats to larger vessels poses significant risks, particularly in open waters and poor weather. Rough seas can undermine the stability of vessels, overwhelm smaller crafts, and considerably elevate the chances of capsizing.
The MSAF has strongly emphasized that loading operations and voyages should not take place when official weather advisories indicate unsafe conditions.
