Jonathan Groff, a native of Lancaster County, is scheduled to receive an honorary doctorate in fine arts from Franklin and Marshall College during the upcoming commencement ceremony on Saturday. Groff, a graduate of Conestoga Valley High School, is widely recognized for his performances as King George III in “Hamilton” and as the voice of Sven in Disney’s “Frozen.”
Unfortunately, Groff will be unable to attend the ceremony due to his commitments starring in a new musical on Broadway. In his absence, his former middle school teacher, Sue Fisher, is set to accept the award on his behalf. Groff has previously expressed gratitude to Fisher during his Tony Award acceptance speech last year, underscoring the influence she has had on his career.
In addition to his achievements in theater, Groff frequently returns to Lancaster to engage with local theater students and contribute to community projects. Notably, he has been involved in fundraising efforts for the restoration of the Ephrata Cloister Amphitheater.
This honorary degree acknowledges Groff’s significant contributions to the arts and his ongoing commitment to uplifting the community that nurtured his talent. His recognition serves as an inspiration for aspiring artists in Lancaster and beyond, reinforcing the importance of connection between successful individuals and their roots.
