HAZARD, Ky. – “Giving Tuesday,” a day dedicated to philanthropy and altruism, takes place the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving each year. Established in 2012, its purpose is to inspire individuals and organizations to contribute to the greater good.
This year, local nonprofits in the mountains are set to benefit immensely from the spirit of generosity during this global event. Mindy Miller, the Director of Development and Communications for the Housing Development Alliance (HDA), emphasized the significance of this day for their fundraising efforts. As a nonprofit heavily reliant on grants and donations, this influx of support is crucial for their mission.
HDA is actively working to rebuild homes lost due to devastating floods two years ago. Despite the enormity of the task—approximately 500 homes were lost—the organization has successfully reconstructed 31 homes so far. Miller noted that donations are immediately utilized to purchase essential construction materials such as nails, shingles, and flooring, ensuring that contributions have a direct and significant impact in the community.
Carrie McCall, Corps Officer for the Salvation Army in Middlesboro, echoed the importance of “Giving Tuesday” as a time to realign with the true essence of the holiday season. The Salvation Army serves meals to the homeless four days a week and provides utility and rental assistance, alongside daily food pantry services. McCall pointed out that, as the organization does not receive government funding, individual donations are vital to their operations.
This holiday season, McCall has set an ambitious goal of raising $100,000, while HDA aimed for $1,500 on Tuesday. By the late afternoon, the alliance had already surpassed its goal, raising $1,680.
Both McCall and Miller highlighted the importance of every dollar contributed, emphasizing that this “Giving Tuesday” exemplifies the community’s commitment to helping those in need.
This event serves as a reminder of the power of collective generosity, and the positive change it can bring to those struggling within the community. As we navigate the holiday season, it’s heartening to see such dedication to helping others and rebuilding lives.
