Local Icon Faces Demolition: What’s Next for Little Bar?

A local favorite, the Little Bar, is on the brink of demolition as part of a redevelopment project aimed at revitalizing the area. The proposal, brought forward by American Campus Communities (ACC) nearly three years ago, seeks to replace the beloved bar, which has been a staple since the 1980s, along with the nearby University Baptist Church, with modern housing developments.

The plan has garnered attention for its commitment to affordability, with 20% of the new housing units set to be priced as low as $450 per person in four-bedroom configurations. This initiative is an encouraging step towards addressing the need for affordable student housing in the area.

City Council approved the project last year, with a vote of six to one in favor. Now, two years later, the proposal is again in front of local authorities, with the City Council’s Zoning Committee having previously endorsed the plans for a nine-story residential building in place of Little Bar and a twelve-story development where the church currently stands. The University Impact District Review Board is expected to weigh in on the latest revisions during an upcoming meeting, which seems to support the redevelopment.

As of now, Little Bar continues to operate and serve its loyal patrons, primarily college students. Further updates will be provided following the upcoming board meeting.

This redevelopment represents an opportunity not only for modern housing solutions but also for the community to adapt and evolve while maintaining essential affordability.
