HAZARD, Ky. – The National Day of Giving, commonly known as “Giving Tuesday,” takes place on the first Tuesday following Thanksgiving and has been celebrated since its inception in 2012. This day is dedicated to encouraging people worldwide to engage in acts of kindness and generosity.
In the mountainous regions of Kentucky, local organizations are poised to benefit from this global movement. Mindy Miller, the Director of Development and Communications for the Housing Development Alliance (HDA), highlighted the significance of this day for their fundraising efforts. As a nonprofit, HDA relies on grants and donations to support its mission.
The organization focuses on rebuilding homes lost in devastating floods two years ago. While an estimated 500 homes were affected, HDA has successfully rebuilt 31 of them to date. According to Miller, the donations collected on Giving Tuesday are put to immediate use for essential materials such as nails, shingles, and flooring, ensuring that contributions make a direct and swift impact on the community.
Carrie McCall, Corps Officer for the Salvation Army in Middlesboro, also expressed the importance of “Giving Tuesday” as a time to reflect on the true spirit of the holiday season, especially following a weekend filled with shopping. The Salvation Army provides essential services, including meals for the homeless, utility and rent assistance, and daily support through their food pantry. With no government funding, individual donations are vital for their year-round operations.
McCall set an ambitious goal to raise $100,000 this season, while HDA aimed for $1,500. By the end of the day, HDA surpassed its goal by raising $1,680.
Both leaders emphasized the idea that every dollar donated counts and has a direct impact on those in need in the community.
In summary, “Giving Tuesday” serves as a vital reminder of the power of generosity and community support. Local organizations like HDA and the Salvation Army are making strides to help those affected by disaster and economic hardship, demonstrating the profound difference that individual contributions can make in people’s lives.
This season of giving reflects a spirit of hope and unity, reminding us that small acts of kindness can lead to significant change in communities.
