Liz Cheney Shocks GOP with Endorsement of Kamala Harris

Former Republican Representative Liz Cheney announced her support for Vice President Kamala Harris, stating she is “proudly” casting her vote for her in Wisconsin. During a campaign event in Ripon, Cheney emphasized the significance of the January 6, 2021 events, criticizing former President Donald Trump for his actions that day. She asserted that anyone capable of such actions “can never be trusted with power again,” highlighting the violence against law enforcement during the Capitol riot.

Cheney’s endorsement comes as she aims to persuade undecided voters away from Trump with just weeks to go before Election Day. She previously committed to supporting efforts to prevent Trump from returning to office. At the campaign event, Harris appealed to Republican and independent voters, encouraging them to prioritize democratic values over party affiliation.

Meanwhile, Trump responded to Cheney’s endorsement on Fox News, dismissing her and questioning her past candidacy. Cheney’s opposition to Trump, particularly during the impeachment proceedings, resulted in her ousting from the House GOP leadership, and she later became vice chair of the committee investigating the January 6 events.

In light of Cheney’s decision, a Trump campaign spokesperson referenced past criticisms Cheney had for Harris’s policies. Despite this, Cheney expressed that her support for Harris stems from a commitment to democracy and constitutional values.

Numerous other Republicans have also endorsed Harris in her campaign against Trump, including former Vice President Dick Cheney and former Illinois Representative Adam Kinzinger. Cheney’s activism against Trump’s influence continues, as she has previously campaigned for moderate Democrats in competitive races and criticized radical Republican candidates.

The Harris campaign aims to engage Republican voters further, hosting events across key swing states and launching targeted advertising aimed at those disillusioned with Trump. However, some Democrats worry that focusing on Republican endorsements may not be the best strategy for Harris’s campaign.
