Liverpool’s Winning Streak Continues Amid Controversy

Arne Slot dismissed a reporter’s question regarding Liverpool’s performance after they secured a 1-0 victory against RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

Darwin Núñez capitalized on a rare starting opportunity, scoring the winning goal in the 27th minute with a close-range finish from Mohamed Salah’s header. With Diogo Jota sidelined due to injury, Núñez stepped up and made a significant impact, although he also had a penalty appeal turned down, adding to the considerations for manager Arne Slot.

This victory marked Liverpool’s sixth consecutive away win in all competitions this season, reinforcing Slot’s impressive start as he has led the team to a record 11 victories in his initial matches since taking over from Jürgen Klopp.

Currently, Liverpool sits second in their Champions League group with nine points, alongside Premier League rivals Aston Villa, while Manchester City follows closely with seven points. Leipzig, still searching for their first point in the tournament, had two goals disallowed during the match, and Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Caoimhín Kelleher, made crucial saves to maintain the team’s lead.

Leipzig began strong and appeared more dominant initially, with Loïs Openda having a goal ruled out for offside just before Liverpool took the lead. Salah’s header, initially set to enter the net, was confirmed by Núñez’s decisive touch. After the goal, Liverpool gained momentum, but Núñez felt aggrieved when he was not awarded a penalty after being clipped by Willi Orbán.

In the second half, Alexis Mac Allister hit the crossbar with a promising shot, but Liverpool struggled to extend their lead and nearly faced repercussions, as Kelleher made vital saves against Benjamin Sesko and a deflected shot from Xavi Simons, who later left the field injured.
