Melissa Gilbert, the beloved actress known for her role as Laura Ingalls on the iconic TV series “Little House on the Prairie,” has recently shared heartwarming news of a reunion with her former co-star, Melissa Sue Anderson. In an Instagram post on December 27, Gilbert announced that she has reconnected with Anderson, who played her sister Mary on the show. The two, now 61 and 63 years old respectively, captured a special moment together backstage at Gilbert’s play “Pen Pals” in New York City.

In the touching photo, Gilbert also included her “Pen Pals” co-star Veanne Cox and actress Betty Buckley. In her heartfelt caption, she expressed joy in rekindling their friendship, stating, “Reconnection with a sister. Long, healing talks. Lots of reminiscing. Lots of catching up. Lots of laughter and a few tears.” Reflecting on their shared history, she added, “I’m so happy to have Melissa Anderson back in my life. We share such an important history that no one else on earth truly understands. Just us Ingalls girls.”

Despite their close on-screen relationship, Gilbert and Anderson have previously acknowledged that they were not particularly close during the show’s run from 1974 to 1983. In her memoir “Prairie Tale,” Gilbert revealed that they struggled to form a sisterly bond, citing differences in their personalities and experiences. Anderson also noted in a 2010 interview that her memories of Gilbert were limited due to their contrasting natures.

However, Gilbert’s recent post indicates a positive shift as she shared, “The past is now just that and we can move forward as the sisters/friends we always wanted to be. What a wonderful Christmas gift.” This reunion comes on the heels of the show’s 50th anniversary in 2024, with a new adaptation in development at Netflix, featuring young actress Alice Halsey taking on the role of Laura. Gilbert expressed her support for the upcoming project, wishing the best to both Netflix and Halsey.

This reunion highlights not only the enduring impact of “Little House on the Prairie” but also the ability to heal and reconnect with those who have shared significant moments in life. As the actresses embark on a new chapter of friendship, it serves as a beautiful reminder of the power of reconciliation and the joy of rediscovering old bonds.
