Lisandro Martinez, the Manchester United defender, has opened up about his harrowing experience with injuries, revealing that at one point, he contemplated retiring from football. The 27-year-old athlete faced a daunting challenge when he suffered an ACL injury last February during a match against Crystal Palace, which sidelined him for nine long months.
Martinez underwent surgery and missed both the conclusion of the previous season and the beginning of the current campaign. He made his much-anticipated return to the pitch in late November during a 2-1 victory against Oliver Glasner’s side. Since his transfer from Ajax for £55 million in July 2022, Martinez has encountered significant injury setbacks, which have hindered his ability to consistently contribute on the field.
The player shared insights from an interview with AFA Estudio, discussing the emotional toll of his injury struggles. “You feel like you’re not a football player anymore,” he expressed, reflecting on the physical and mental battles he faced during his recovery. Early in his rehabilitation, he admitted, “I didn’t want to play football anymore,” but with the support of his family and friends, he gradually began to regain his determination.
In addition to the ACL injury, Martinez fractured his metatarsal the following April, resulting in additional months of rehabilitation and requiring a second operation. This injury prevented him from participating in key matches, including the FA Cup final against Manchester City and a Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.
Martinez highlighted the importance of resilience in overcoming adversity and emphasized that true character is revealed in tough times. His recovery journey was not easy but marked by a commitment to self-improvement. “For me, it was day by day, a constant struggle,” he noted, detailing his dedication to physical rehabilitation and mental well-being through therapy. As he progressed, he discovered strength both physically and mentally, allowing him to regain his place on the team.
Today, Martinez feels rejuvenated and attributes his return to success after enduring significant trials. His story serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of perseverance and the vital support of loved ones in overcoming life’s challenges.
