This weekend, Lionsgate is showcasing Mel Gibson’s latest directorial film, “Flight Risk,” which made an impressive $950,000 during its Thursday previews. This marks Gibson’s first directorial project in nearly a decade since the acclaimed “Hacksaw Ridge,” which also enjoyed a successful collaboration with Lionsgate.

Currently, “Flight Risk” is projected to earn between $9 million and $11 million for the weekend. If it achieves this, it will become Lionsgate’s second No. 1 film of the month, alongside “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera.” This would be the first time Lionsgate has accomplished such a feat since November 2023, following the success of “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.”

The film is being released in approximately 3,100 theaters, including 660 Premium Large Format screens and 273 Motion seat screens. However, it faces challenges in the box office race, particularly due to competing attractions like Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King,” which is expected to draw significant audiences.

In terms of reviews, “Flight Risk” has received a 25% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while “Den of Thieves 2” garnered a higher 60%. Audience ratings for “Flight Risk” are more favorable, with a 72% positivity score from Screen Engine/Comscore PostTrak.

Further contributing to the weekend’s box office dynamics is Neon’s thriller, “Presence,” directed by Steven Soderbergh, which is aiming for an opening of $2 million to $3 million. The film has received positive reviews, holding an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It presents a chilling narrative of a family confronted by a supernatural force in their new home.

Angel Studios is also debuting “Brave the Dark,” featuring Jared Harris, and it similarly appears to be targeting single-digit millions in its opening. The film has a strong audience rating with 62% of viewers likely to recommend it.

The competitive environment this weekend includes Sony’s R-rated comedy “One of Them Days,” which performed well with $17 million after its first week, while Universal’s “Wolf Man” experienced a softer debut at $14.4 million.

Overall, while “Flight Risk” faces hurdles, it carries the potential for a commendable showing, and the box office landscape is increasingly vibrant with various genres appealing to different audience segments. The diverse lineup could bring exciting opportunities for moviegoers and exhibitors alike this weekend.

In summary, the weekend box office has gained momentum with several new releases vying for attention, promising a mix of thrill and entertainment for audiences.
