Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams is facing another suspension. Reports indicate that Williams is set to be suspended for two games due to a violation of the NFL’s Performance-Enhancing Substances policy, as reported by ESPN’s Eric Woodyward.
Earlier this season, Williams faced a six-game suspension for violating the league’s gambling policy, as he placed bets on sports at the Lions’ facility—though not on the NFL itself. However, this suspension was later shortened when the NFL revised its policy, resulting in him missing the first four games of the season.
Drafted in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Alabama, Williams has shown immense talent. However, his time on the field has been limited. He played just six games in his rookie season as he recovered from a torn ACL and had a rocky start to his second year due to the gambling suspension.
This season, Williams has made significant strides, recording 361 receiving yards and three touchdowns. However, his upcoming suspension will interrupt his progress. He will miss the Lions’ home game against the Tennessee Titans this weekend, as well as a crucial road game against the Green Bay Packers the following week.
The Lions have been depending on Williams more this season following the departure of wide receiver Josh Reynolds in the offseason, which created an opportunity for Williams to step up as the primary No. 2 receiver. In his absence, the team will look for contributions from Kalif Raymond and newcomer Tim Patrick, in addition to the significant efforts from Amon-Ra St. Brown. Nevertheless, none of the current roster can replicate Williams’ ability to stretch the field.
Details regarding the specific substance that led to Williams’ suspension have not yet been disclosed.
