Police in Detroit are currently investigating an incident involving Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams, who was not arrested after a traffic stop revealed a gun under his seat without a permit. Authorities confirmed that the firearm was registered to Williams, although he lacks a concealed-carry permit, which is required in Michigan for carrying a gun in a vehicle.

After the stop on October 8, Williams was initially handcuffed and placed in a patrol car. His brother, who was driving, possessed his own firearm and a valid concealed-carry permit. During the encounter, Williams identified himself as a member of the Detroit Lions and stated he needed the gun for personal protection. Commander Michael McGinnis expressed that he believed there was sufficient cause to arrest Williams and that he should have been processed at the Detroit Detention Center.

However, Williams was released after a sergeant arrived and communicated with senior officers over the phone, which led to the gun being returned to him. The Wayne County prosecutor’s office is now reviewing the case for any potential charges.

The Detroit Police Department emphasized that no one is above the law and that all individuals who violate the law will be held accountable, regardless of their status. Williams’ attorney posited that no laws were broken due to his brother’s concealed-carry permit, which could apply to both firearms in the vehicle.

Williams, who was a first-round draft pick in 2022, is already facing a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substance policy and missed four games this season due to a gambling policy violation. Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell acknowledged the seriousness of the situation but also expressed confidence in Williams’s potential to learn and grow from his experiences.

In a positive light, the situation provides Williams with an opportunity to reflect on his decisions and make better choices moving forward, with supportive guidance from his team and coaches.

Overall, as this investigation unfolds, it will be crucial for the organization and Williams to navigate this complexity constructively, emphasizing accountability and growth.
